The Caring Economy

OUR FOUNDATION: THE CARING ECONOMY

An Economy That Measures More Than Money.

Economic growth matters.

Business investment matters.

Entrepreneurship, productivity and innovation matter.

But what is the purpose of a prosperous economy if people cannot afford to live, raise families, access healthcare or enjoy their communities?

ALIGN believes economic success should also be measured by how well society cares for its people.

The established concept of the care economy recognizes the enormous value of paid and unpaid care, including childcare, healthcare, eldercare and support for people with disabilities.

ALIGN builds upon that principle with a broader civic philosophy:

A caring economy should create prosperity while improving the everyday lives of the people who sustain it.

THE SIX PILLARS OF ALIGN

1. ECONOMIC DIGNITY

People should have meaningful opportunities to earn, save, build businesses and participate in economic growth.

We support exploring innovative approaches to affordability, employment, community investment and shared prosperity.

2. COMMUNITY DIVIDENDS

When major developments create significant economic value, ALIGN believes communities should have opportunities to share in that success.

We advocate exploring transparent, legally structured community-benefit and dividend pilots that could return a portion of negotiated economic benefits directly to eligible residents.

3. COMPASSION WITH ACCOUNTABILITY

Compassion should guide public services, but good intentions must be accompanied by measurable results.

We support practical approaches to housing, homelessness, healthcare, accessibility, childcare and support for vulnerable residents.

4. GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABILITY

Public money belongs to the public.

We support independent audits, transparent budgets, responsible procurement, accessible public records and meaningful oversight of government spending.

5. BEAUTIFUL, SAFE AND CONNECTED COMMUNITIES

The quality of our surroundings influences our quality of life.

Clean streets, safe parks, attractive neighbourhoods, accessible public spaces and vibrant cultural activities should be part of a community's identity.

6. FUTURE-READY GOVERNMENT

Government must understand the technologies, markets and challenges shaping the next generation.

We encourage responsible innovation, digital public services, entrepreneurship, modern infrastructure and evidence-based policy development.

LESS SPECIAL INTERESTS. MORE PUBLIC INTEREST.

ALIGN believes democratic institutions should serve the public interest.

Businesses, unions, community organizations and advocacy groups all have legitimate roles in public discussions.

But no organization should receive privileged influence simply because it has greater financial resources, political connections or access to decision-makers.

We support:

  • Transparent lobbying and disclosure of potential conflicts of interest.

  • Stronger safeguards against corruption and misuse of public resources.

  • Open and competitive public procurement.

  • Independent scrutiny of major public expenditures.

  • Public consultation that includes ordinary residents.

  • Clear reporting on the results of government programs.

Access to government should not depend on who you know.

WHAT SHOULD THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE?

IMAGINE A MORE ALIGNED FUTURE.

Imagine a city where residents can see exactly how their taxes are spent.

Where major developments generate measurable benefits for surrounding communities.

Where young people can afford to begin their careers, build businesses and imagine owning homes.

Where seniors feel safe, families can access affordable childcare and people with disabilities can participate fully in community life.

Imagine streets that are clean, beautiful and welcoming.

Neighbourhoods filled with public art, community events, green spaces and opportunities to connect.

Imagine a government that listens before making decisions, measures the results afterward and admits when something doesn't work.

A government where innovation is welcomed, waste is challenged and public officials remember whom they serve.

Imagine prosperity that reaches beyond corporate balance sheets and into people's everyday lives.

That is the future ALIGN wants to explore, advocate for and help build.
